The Area

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) brings together five Australian and 13 leading international universities as well as Australian and global companies to create entirely new optics-based technologies with enormous market potential. The Centre has received $34.9 million funding from the Australian Research Council to operate from 2020-2027.

TMOS will develop the next-generation of miniaturised optical systems with functionalities beyond what is conceivable today. By harnessing the disruptive concept of meta-optics, the Centre will overcome complex challenges in light generation, manipulation and detection at the nanoscale. The Centre brings together a trans-disciplinary team of world-leaders in science, technology and engineering to deliver scientific innovations in optical systems for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

As a Centre, we strongly believe that diversity improves ideas and innovation and leads to better outcomes and productivity. Diversity and fostering a culture of inclusiveness will be a key contributor to the scientific excellence of TMOS. Along with other initiatives, we will provide carer grants to support our centre members with caring / family responsibilities to participate in professional activities.

TMOS aims to develop a multidisciplinary, dynamic, interactive and collaborative culture fostering future research leaders who thrive in academic excellence and are equipped with strong transferable skills. The centre will also offer a mentoring program for early career researchers while providing opportunities to hone other skills such as outreach, industry engagement, and building international networks.

The Centre Administration Officer will be based at the Research School of Physics, ANU.

The Research School of Physics represents Australia's largest university based research and teaching activity in the physics discipline. Hundreds of academics, technical staff and students form the School's greatest asset, its people. This critical mass of researchers is of fundamental importance in fostering the kind of interdisciplinary interactions that create modern research excellence.

The Position

Based in the department of Electronic and Materials Engineering within the Research School of Physics. The Centre Administration Officer provides administrative support to the staff, students and visitors of the ANU Node of TMOS, and TMOS broadly from time-to-time. The main responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Finance, purchasing, reconciliation etc.
  • Human resources liaison, general administrative support
  • First point of contact, including email triage
  • Governance support such as meeting organisation, minute-taking and drafting reports
  • Event coordination, including outreach

The Person

To excel in this role you will have experience in general administration and financial systems with an interest or experience in expanding your skillset to include other aspects of administration. You will demonstrate:

  • A passion for fostering a supportive team culture
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisation and event management skills
  • A commitment to collaboration, consultation, and inclusion

Non-required experience and skills:

  • Governance experience would be well-regarded
  • Smartsheet experience would be well-regarded
  • Finance and reporting systems experience in a similar organisation would be well-regarded
