About Us
The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985. It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government.
The work of the VIFM can be described as a cycle of three parts:
VIFM is based at the Coronial Services Centre which also houses the Coroners Court of Victoria.
This position sits within Forensic Services which includes the departments of Forensic Pathology, Forensic Sciences and Clinical Forensic Medicine. Forensic Science encompasses Toxicology, Molecular Biology and Histology, and support VIFM's vision with providing a core forensic toxicology service to the State of Victoria in relation to deaths reported to the coroner and Victoria Police.
About the Role
The Technical Officer's role supports the core forensic toxicology service, and involves the receipt, processing and storage of specimens received in the laboratory for analysis. This role also requires the technical officer to perform toxicology testing in both coronial cases and cases submitted to the laboratory from Victoria Police. The provision of this service is essential to meeting the evidence provision in the courts for all Victorian Medico-legal cases.
