The Opportunity

The Medical Coder will be required to register, code and trace cancer notifications, and provide high level administrative support for Tasmanian Cancer Registry (TCR) activities.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Review pathology reports, registration forms and death records to determine completeness, accuracy and eligibility for registration.
  • Code data according to local, national and international coding standards for cancer topography and morphology using ICD-O3 classification system.
  • Process hospital, death and interstate notifications of cancer including undertaking data-linkage to match hospital and death records to existing cancer notifications.
  • Contribute to the development of TCR systems and processes.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate:

  • Completion of a diploma level qualification with relevant work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience in medical coding and/or understanding of medical terminology and human anatomy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people.
  • Ability to work co-operatively and as part of a team.
  • Ability to act independently using initiative, judgement and discretion, particularly when dealing with matters of a confidential nature.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience working in a health setting in the area of health information management.
  • Knowledge from studying or working in the field of cancer.


Appointment to this role will be at HEO 4 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $80,122 comprising base salary within the range of $64,643 to $68,480 plus 17% superannuation (pro-rata).
