The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) provides a range of government programs and services which focus on improving community safety, victim services, regulatory services, crime prevention, and building strong collaboration across the justice system.

DJCS oversees functions including: Aboriginal Justice, Victim Support, Justice Services, Family Violence, Justice Operations, Regional Services Network, Corrections, Youth Justice, Emergency Management, Police and Crime Prevention, Regulation, Corporate Services, Justice Coordination, and Workplace Safety Policy.

DJCS is now recruiting several Associate Deputy Secretary positions who will work together to deliver on key priorities of the Victorian Government and ministers. Together we will work towards a vision of a connected justice and community safety system, where we're working to build a safer, fairer and stronger Victoria.


 

About the roles

The Associate Deputy Secretary works toward realising a clear and unifying vision of a justice and community safety system that works together to build a safer, fairer, and stronger Victoria. The role is involved in building partnerships with the Victorian communities, government, and community sector to provide authoritative strategic leadership, advice, and reform across the department.

We want leaders who will foster an environment where our people enjoy coming to work and thrive in their roles; where they have the systems and capabilities in place to make it easier to collaborate across the department and beyond to achieve outcomes that benefit the community. You will create, shape, and cultivate a contemporary and values-based workplace culture and champion behaviours such as respect and integrity.

Under the direction of a Deputy Secretary, you will oversee and lead the work of a business area to ensure the delivery of the justice and community safety portfolio. You will provide visible leadership to ensure positive service outcomes.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Support the Deputy Secretary in leading a Group to ensure deliverables are met.
  • Lead and manage a high-performing team of professionals and ensure their efficient and effective performance.
  • Provide independent counsel to the Deputy Secretary, Secretary and Board of Management on the full spectrum of issues across their specialised portfolio.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage all aspects of a large complex team of professionals including staff and project management, budget oversight and procurement.
  • Demonstrated experience working at a senior executive level within government or the public service.
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, and experience in providing authoritative and concise, solutions-based legal and policy advice to Government, under pressure.
  • Proven senior level communication, relationship management, negotiation, and customer service skills in delivering high quality legal and policy advice and outcomes, including at a whole-of-government level.
  • A proven ability to work in a sustained way and deliver results under pressure.
