The NSM role requires an individual who can demonstrate strengths in stakeholder engagement, both internally and externally. Credibility, honesty, and integrity play a central part of the NSM role.

The NSM will be required to provide first rate professional security advice to all staff. In addition, they will also be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of a robust fire safety programme and manage the provision of transport at Post, including implementation and management of protective and physical security measures across the British High Commision’s Australia Network (encompassing offices and residences in Canberra, Sydney,Melbourne and Brisbane and Perth).

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Security Management

  • Implementation of protective and physical security measures across the Australia Network in accordance with British Government Policy and Post guidelines. Monitoring and updating of guidelines in response to changing circumstances.
  • Day to day oversight of Security Resources in all Australia Network posts across 5 different cities, including liaison with facilities management contractor and 3rd party security contractor to ensure seamless security arrangements are in place.
  • Management of security related procurement and maintenance.
  • Physical security review of rental properties for incoming UK based officers.
  • Maintain close liaison with Aust. Gov Home Affairs, Physical Security Section, AFP Protection Liaison Offices across the Network. Maintain contact networks for State Police CT and Public Order Sections. (Demonstrations & Protests)
  • Play an active part in the High Commission’s crisis management plans and take part in crisis exercises as and when required.
  • Management of Country Based Staff and contractor security clearances, administration, documentation, security interviews, criminal history checks (AFP) and UK National Security Vetting Service.
  • Lead on visits by the Regional Overseas Security Manager and Overseas Security Advisers and the implementation of specific recommendations.
  • Co-ordinate security inductions, site access and the issue of ID/Access cards.
  • Incident investigation and reporting.
  • Quarterly Post Security Committee Meetings, minutes, actions and agenda
  • Responsibility of incoming/outgoing diplomatic and freight bags.

Fire Safety

  • Review and update emergency procedures including testing of emergency evacuation processes, annual fire safety plans, assessments and health and safety in accordance with British Government Policy and Australian law.
  • Induct new staff on fire safety issues
  • Function and Event Security, Fire Safety Resource advice and management.


  • Lead on all transport including: ensure vehicle log books and car documents are up to date and compliant with Local/UK regulations. Daily management of 2 x Drivers.
  • Assist with the purchasing and disposal of official vehicles. Ensuring effective maintenance of all official fleet vehicles.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Essential on arrival:

  • Firm, decisive and confident.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written) to staff and other external parties.
  • Adaptability, flexibility, pro-activity, excellent team-working skills and ability to work under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to perform risk assessments
  • Full valid Australian driving licence.
  • IT literate including MS Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.
