Port Hedland is a growing town of around 15,000 people situated in Western Australias beautiful Pilbara region and employs approx. 270 staff from diverse cultural backgrounds. Located approximately 1,800km north of Perth, 600km south of Broome, 235km east of Karratha, and 2,400km west of Darwin it sits on a beautiful and rugged coastline. Its role is well established on both the national and international stage, attracting prominent resource companies and contributing at a nationally recognised level to the broader Australian economy. It is also Australias largest bulk export port.

The lifestyle is relaxed and its location on the Indian ocean provides for a variety of leisure activities soon to be enhanced by the Spoilbank Marina development. The original inhabitants, the Kariyarra people, call the place Marapikurrinya for the hand shaped formation of the tidal creeks coming off the natural harbour. The Town has two main residential centres, Port and South Hedland, which offer a range of community facilities and services including cultural hubs, recreation and shopping. Importantly, it has numerous cafes providing quality coffee to rival any capital city in Australia. The International Airport usually has regular direct flights to Bali, Brisbane and Perth (dependent on COVID travel restrictions).

Your Role

As part of the Senior Leadership Team and reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, you will lead and motivate the Financial Services Team to deliver financial and management reporting, the annual budget and long-term financial planning.

Lead and foster a culture of communication, innovation and transparency throughout the organisation consistent with the Town of Port Hedlands values of Unity, Quality and Integrity.

You will also be a valued member of the project team embarking on the exciting journey of delivering of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system across the organisation.

Cultivate productive and effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally, facilitating cooperation, trust and respect utilising and modelling high levels of emotional intelligence.

Your skills and background within finance will be complemented by your experience in leading teams, prioritising competing projects and preparing sound reports for Executive and key stakeholders. Experience within a similar role, particularly in local government is highly desirable.

Remuneration package

A competitive total reward package in the region of $200,000 will be offered to the successful candidate, negotiable depending on experience. This will include a base salary from $140,000, + 12% superannuationa 4 x 2 manager house located in Port Hedland, a fully expensed vehicle or vehicle allowance of up to $15,000, generous utility allowance and six weeks of annual leave including access to the Towns wellness program (free gym membership, access to classes and pools). Relocation assistance of up to $15,000.

If you have the below, we want to hear from you!

  • Demonstrated experience in management and leadership of teams
  • Degree level qualification in Accounting or accounting related discipline
  • CPA/ICAA membership
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards
  • Sound understanding of GST, FBT and other taxation legislation
  • Understanding of the WA local government legislative framework (desirable)
  • Local government or large corporate financial management experience
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to improve and enhance processes and practices
  • Experience in the preparation and management of annual budgets and periodic financial reviews
  • Excellent customer service and ability to drive customer service focused team culture
