First Grade has partnered with a Federal Government Client seeking a Projects Officer Capacity Building First Nations based in Sydney.

Primary purpose of the role:

To support the strategic development, delivery, evaluation, and promotion of capacity building projects to support the long-term resilience and sustainability of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts sector.

This is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander designated position, classified under Section 12 Special Measures of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. This employment opportunity is only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Responsibilities:

  • Develop capacity building initiatives to respond to development needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, arts workers and arts organisations including a new pilot First Nations Leadership Program
  • Effectively coordinate and support the delivery of a range of professional development opportunities such as training workshops, residential and webinars
  • Deliver projects through sound project and event management principles and the application of Indigenous protocols to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Work closely with the Capacity Building and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts teams to identify and respond to strategic opportunities and challenges for capacity building of the sector
  • Engage and work collaboratively with colleagues across Australia Council to deliver key outcomes and projects
  • Working closely with the Research & Knowledge Management team by assisting in the evaluation of projects, measuring and reporting on the value of Council projects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist and arts workers and the wider arts sector
  • Manage supplier and partner contracts; monitor and report on budgets for allocated projects; and produce regular project documents including schedules, plans, and status reporting

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of Indigenous culture, with the ability to establish credibility with stakeholders by understanding and applying Indigenous protocols appropriately
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Strong experience in managing projects, including preparation of project plans, reporting against key milestones and assisting in the evaluation process
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to prepare complex brief, project plans and reports using plain English
  • Sound problem solving skills - identifying and proposing workable solutions to problems
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally as required, including remote locations, a driver’s license is required
