Within the Strategic Welfare function a Unit Safety Advisor (USA) is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex work health and safety work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
A USA will interpret and provide advice within the strategic welfare function area based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessment, investigations and perform procedural, clerical and administrative support work to achieve results.
The USA will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
About our Team
The USA represents the Unit level workforce on health and safety matters. 452SQN USA has responsibility for the supervision and coordination of activities conducted by six Unit Safety Coordinators (USCs) in five locations: Darwin, Tindal (Katherine), Townsville, Amberley (Ipswich) and Oakey.

As the majority of USA coordination and supervision is conducted remotely, the USA requires sound administrative and computer skills and is required to handle sensitive personnel information.
The USA must interact with uniformed and non-uniformed personnel, higher organisational elements and other Safety Network personnel to ascertain an understanding of workplace hazards and to assist with WHS database reporting and risk management.
The USA must be able to objectively respond to and investigate workplace incidents. clear, concise and accurate communication is an essential attribute to enable effective and timely risk management whilst high level communication skills are required when liaising with internal and external agencies.
